Three bridges across Jacksonville have reopened after multiple crashes and hazardous icy conditions prompted their closure Wednesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Around 9:20 a.m., the Hart, Main Street and Mathews bridges were closed due to the weather conditions, JSO said.
As of 11:40 a.m., all three bridges were back open, according to JSO.
News4JAX spoke with Antoine Hardiman, whose car limped off the Hart Bridge before it was closed.
“First is the safety of others when you stop on the bridge. So I tried to veer to the right of the median. Just carried us down, [the] gravity of bridge carried us down,” Hardiman said. “Tried to stop. Nothing we could do. Slammed into like five other cars.”
Coincidentally, Hardiman actually works on the bridge and he was on his way to work—only to find the top of the bridge was downright dangerous.
“We was actually stopped and cones were out. Other cars behind cones were on big sheet of ice,” Hardiman said.
Residents were asked to use extreme caution if they must drive Wednesday, particularly on elevated areas like bridges and overpasses.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday for all Southeast Georgia counties and most Northeast Florida counties except St. Johns County and the southern portions of Putnam County.
