A 57-year-old substitute teacher is accused of “actively encouraging students” to fight in the classroom, according to an arrest report obtained by News4JAX.
GW, 57, was arrested on Saturday following a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigation into a child abuse incident that occurred on Feb. 12.
The report did not disclose what school the incident took place.
The report said W “incited four kids to batter” a student who would not cooperate when asked to join a small group.
According to JSO, W began to get frustrated with the student and asked the classroom, “Who in here can beat him up?” The report said four students raised their hands, then W called them to come to the front of the class individually to fight the student as she watched.
The report also said W “ferociously” pushed the student, “causing him to hit his head on a desk.”
W called for assistance after the fight and told the staff that the student needed “behavioral intervention,” but the report said she did not mention the fights or that the student was injured from hitting his head.
W was immediately terminated and escorted out after officials talked to other witnesses about the incident.
W told police that she tried to pick up the victim who hit his head and that she did not encourage any students to “beat up” a student or to fight, the arrest report said.
W faces one count of child abuse and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
News4JAX reached out to Duval County Public Schools and the school district confirmed that the incident did not take place at any of its campuses.
