The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says one of the sedans, a Nissan, struck the man’s body after he became unconscious, and that the vehicle dragged him.
A bicyclist died in Jacksonville’s Mandarin area early Friday morning after two sedans hit and killed him while he was attempting to cross a street, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
JSO Sergeant Hungerford says at approximately 2:08 a.m., the bicyclist who is identified as a Black man in his late-20s, rode the bike westbound on Hartley Road in an attempt to cross over San Jose Boulevard.
The sergeant says Volkswagen, Honda and Nissan sedans (three in total) were traveling southbound on San Jose Boulevard, approaching the intersection.
“The drivers reported that they had a green traffic signal and did not see the bicyclist crossing the road until it was too late,” Hungerford said. “The Volkswagen struck the bicyclist in the southbound lanes of San Jose Boulevard.”
After being struck, police say the man “landed in the roadway,” as the Nissan then struck his “unconscious body” and dragged him.
The driver of the Nissan told the sheriff’s office he stopped as soon as he realized he was dragging the man and noticed he was “lodged beneath his vehicle,” according to Hungerford.
JSO says first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department then responded to the scene and pronounced the bicyclist dead upon arrival.
“All three drivers stopped at the crash scene and are cooperating with investigators,” Hungerford said. “There were no signs of driver impairment.”
Hungerford says this crash is the 99th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.
