Lakeland 6-year-old dies after shooting himself in head, police say

Police are investigating the death of a 6-year-old boy who sustained a gunshot wound to the head on Sunday.

According to the Lakeland Police Department, the incident occurred at 3:44 p.m. in the 200 block of West Crawford Street.

Detectives said that the victim, Major Smith, along with his father, Myron Smith Sr., and brother, Myron Smith Jr., had just returned from a trip to the store.

After parking in the driveway, all three exited the rental vehicle, a Nissan Altima.

Myron Smith Sr. stepped away to make a phone call, detectives said, and during that time Major reentered the Nissan where he found the gun, a Glock 19X, located between the driver’s seat and center console.

The child sustained critical injuries and was taken to Lakeland Regional Health where he remained until his death on Tuesday.

LPD said they are still investigating the case and that no charges have been filed at this time.
