A man was hit and killed Monday morning as he tried to cross 66th St. N. in a wheelchair against the signal, according to the Pinellas Park Police Department. 

The backstory:

Police said a 38-year-old man in a Nissan Titan truck was traveling north on 66th St. N, approaching 78th Ave. N. in the curb lane shortly before 6:30 a.m. 

At the same time, a 73-year-old man in a wheelchair was crossing 66th St. N. in the crosswalk against the signal. 

The truck struck the man in the wheelchair while in the roadway, according to police. 

Police said the driver of the truck stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The Pinellas Park Police Department says it’s important for pedestrians to use the crosswalks appropriately and wear reflective/high-visibility clothing while traversing intersections, especially in the early morning hours with limited sunlight.
