A tow truck driver pulled over along Highway 20 West in Walton County got an unexpected warning on Monday night when a man ran up and told him a nearby home was on fire, prompting a 911 call and a rapid response from firefighters.
At 11:28 p.m., Walton County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a home on Highway 20 West in the Portland community, according to officials.
The tow truck driver had been stopped on the side of the road when the man approached and reported the fire, and the driver immediately called 911.
Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies say they were the first to arrive and found heavy flames and smoke coming from a single-wide mobile home.
Engine 12 crews arrived within minutes and began a preliminary search for anyone who might have been trapped inside.
No one was inside the home at the time of the fire, and crews conducted multiple searches to confirm it was clear, according to officials.
With assistance from Eglin Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services, firefighters knocked down the blaze within minutes of arriving, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.
Highway 20 West was temporarily shut down while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
