Middleburg man, 33, killed in wrong-way crash after 18-year-old Lake City woman loses control on US 441

A wrong-way crash Saturday night on US 441 left a 33-year-old Middleburg man dead and an 18-year-old Lake City woman seriously injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the woman was headed south on US 441 around 8:40 p.m. when she lost control “for reasons still under investigation” and crossed the center median into the oncoming lane, just south of County Road 237 in Alachua County.

FHP said the woman’s car hit a pickup truck headed north and then flipped, landing on its roof. The collision sent debris flying into two cars that were headed north behind the pickup, troopers said.

The driver of the pickup truck, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. The Lake City woman was taken to UF Health Shands with serious injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

The 23-year-old man driving the third car was not hurt. Neither were a woman and man, both 18, in the fourth car. All three were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

FHP said the crash investigation is ongoing.
