LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. —
Three people crashed a car into a canal in Lehigh Acres on Friday morning, leading to a bizarre chain of events that ended with one of them being arrested for making a false police report.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the trio drove their vehicle straight into the canal off 41st Street Southwest, and soon after, Degnis Cano Murillo called 911 to report an outrageous story. Murillo claimed that he and his friends had been carjacked at gunpoint by four strangers who emerged from the woods, stealing their car.
However, investigators quickly determined that this story was fabricated. Deputies located the Nissan submerged in the canal and noted that there were empty beer bottles found inside the vehicle, suggesting that alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
Despite the alarming claims, authorities found no evidence supporting Murillo’s account of being held at gunpoint. As a result, Murillo was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail for filing a false report.
