At least two people are lucky to be alive after a fire destroyed their Miramar home early Tuesday.
It happened at around 2:55 a.m. at SW 68th Avenue and SW 33rrd Street in Miramar. Fire crews said they found the active fire burning the home and cars outside.
It took them about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, and no injuries were reported. But a family is now displaced and wondering how this could have happened.
Homeowner DH, who said he has lived in the home for 40 years and is a caregiver to an elderly man, said the front door was blocked and he had to drag him out the back door.
“When I woke up, all I see [was] that big fire was outside. I thought was an officer outside, so when I jumped to open the door, the door cannot open at all, and that big, blazing fire coming right through,” he said. “All I do, I get Mr. J, drag him out and call this guy. I say, ‘Let’s go.'”
H said no one in the house smokes, both he and the other man were asleep and his niece, who also lives there, was not home.
His niece told NBC6 she got an alert from a surveillance camera inside her room when the fire started. She listened in, heard the flames popping and saw how they appeared to burn outside her room.
The family thinks the fire may have started just outside their home, but they’re unsure how. Investigators are still looking into the cause.
“We are still on scene performing after fire activities. Red Cross has been called in to assist the residents,” Miramar Fire Rescue said.
This is a developing story.
