Lithium battery on e-bike causes house fire in Boca Raton

The lithium battery of an e-bike caused a house fire on Monday night.

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR), at around 9:45 p.m. units responded to a structure fire near Valencia Drive in the Boca Grove Community. PBCFR says the 911 caller was a utility driver who stated the back patio was on fire.

Through a sweep of the home, firefighters found a fire in the outdoor kitchen area of the home. Launching an aggressive fire attack, crews had the fire out in under five minutes.

A PBCFR fire investigator quickly determined the cause of the fire after he found a melted e-bike with multiple damaged lithium batteries found within the debris.

The fire was ruled an accident and the cause was listed as an unspecified malfunction of the e-bike.

Firefighters warn that lithium batteries, like those found in e-bikes, can be hazardous in certain circumstances. The fire department advises not to charge the type of batteries in an enclosed area, to not leave the batteries charging for any longer than necessary and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging.

When lithium batteries malfunction, they can cause fires, PBCFR warns.

This isn’t the first lithium battery malfunction in Palm Beach County. In August, PBCFR responded to a garage fire that was caused by a lithium battery in Delray Beach.
