Man accused of using coded language in attempt to destroy evidence in double homicide

Almost six years after a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of two people, detectives said an arrest has been made Monday.

On January 13, 2019, a tragic shooting incident occurred in West Palm Beach, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to others.

Nearly six years ago, deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) responded to a shooting at 675 Caroline Avenue at the Lake Belvedere Estates Park community. At the scene, deputiesfound one victim already dead, two others who were later transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Tragically, a second person was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The arrest affidavit stated thatthe victims were standing in a park when unknown suspects began firing at them.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators recovered multiple expended cartridge casings from the scene, including 7.62 x 39mm and 9mm rounds. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence captured the suspects arriving, firing at the victims, and fleeing the scene, the affidavit detailed. Footage showed one suspect with a rifle and another with a handgun, both wearing long-sleeved hooded sweatshirts and long pants.

Through ballistics analysis and surveillance footage, Jabari Scott was identified as a suspect. A search warrant was executed at Scott’s home on February 11, 2019, which led to the recovery of clothing and shoes matching those seen in the surveillance footage. Additionally, Scott’s mobile device records placed him near the crime scene at the time of the shooting.

Detectives recovered FC Luger 9mm ammunition from Scott’s residence, matching the casings found at the crime scenes. The investigation also linked Scott to previous shootings on December 3 and 4, 2018, through ballistics evidence.Forensic analysis confirmed that the same firearms were used in all three incidents.

During a post-Miranda interview, Scott denied involvement in the January 13 shooting but admitted to the December shootings. Scott was then booked into the PBC Jail for violation of probation. While in jail, Scott contacted a friend of his through inmate recordings and told in coded language he was questioned about the double homicide. Additionally, he asked his friend to grab the clothes and shoes he wore the night of the crime and “Burn them,” and “Take them to the grill,” according to the arrest affidavit.

Probable cause was established to arrest the 27-year-old on October 7 on multiple counts, including first-degree murder with a firearm, attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

The affidavit did not detail why the arrest took over half a decade.
