Man and 5 dogs escape Fort Lauderdale house fire; French bulldog dies

A beloved French bulldog perished in a Fort Lauderdale house fire that forced a man and his animals to evacuate on Thursday.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said the man was able to escape the home on Southwest 6th Street with two chihuahuas, but his other four dogs, all Frenchies, were still missing inside the home.

When firefighters arrived, the house was burning and filled with smoke.

“I went inside and there was smoke everywhere. The house was filled. My alarms were going off,” homeowner CS said.

Firefighters were able to find the dogs in another bedroom, rescue them and start treating them right away. At least one of the pets needed K-9 CPR.

One of the animals did not survive. Two others were taken to a nearby animal hospital, and the fourth is doing OK and back with his owner.

Video from Chopper6 shows firefighters on the roof of the home, and a window charred black.

The fire was knocked out in 20 minutes, according to authorities.

“I ran inside ’cause I wanted to find out where the fire was at, and it was in my son’s bedroom,” S said.

Authorities confirmed the fire started in the bedroom, but the cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

This is a developing story.
