man was found dead in the Iroquois neighborhood on Sunday, with his car missing. A day later, the car was found near Miami, Florida. Police identified a person of interest, who was arrested Monday after a police chase.
“They received information from the FBI that there was perhaps a subject that was involved in a murder in Kentucky that was in Miami Dade county,” Alvardo Zabaleta, Miami-Dade Police spokesperson said.
The investigation began Sunday in the 800 block of Inverness Avenue when 45-year-old Alain Garcia Perez was found dead with blunt force injuries. Police noticed his car was missing.
On Monday, detectives in Florida received a tip from the FBI about a stolen car that was believed to be connected to the Iroquois homicide. One of the detectives found the Red Chevrolet Camaro parked near an apartment complex.
During the investigation, the driver, later identified as Liobys Caro-Mena, drove off in the car and the police chase began. During the chase, Caro-Mena crashed the car into another, injuring those inside.
He continued driving and later crashed into multiple other cars stopped at a red light.
“I am in pain, but like I said, I thank God for life,” Crash victim Pearl Thomas told WTVJ, the NBC South Florida affiliate. “I didn’t see anything. It was like boom surprise.”
The crash caused Caro-Mena to lose control and the car rolled over.
He was arrested and charged with murder, grand theft of a vehicle, fleeing at high speed, leaving the scene of a crash, and reckless driving.
