A man died and three officers were placed on administrative duty after a confrontation and police shooting Tuesday in Miami.
The shooting happened at around 4:30 p.m. in the area of the 1400 block of Northwest 67th Street near Liberty City.
The Miami Police Department’s Tactical Robbery Unit and the Crime Gun Intelligence Center were conducting surveillance in the area when they encountered a man who they had been looking for since Sunday.
“About 10-12 shots that were fired that were caught by one of our cameras in the area, that led the detectives to identify the offender as being the individual responsible,” Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said of Sunday’s incident.
After a confrontation, the three officers fired their guns, officials said.
“They made contact with him coming out of one of the markets. As they approached the offender, a foot pursuit ensued, at which time there was a confrontation in the back of the apartment complex,” Morales said.
NBC6 captured video of what appeared to be a gun on the sidewalk. Police said the person they were chasing did have a gun on him, but it’s unclear if he fired the gun at the officers.
Miami Fire Rescue officials said the man was taken to Ryder Trauma Center from the scene in critical condition.
He later died at the hospital. Officials haven’t identified him.
Police said the officers weren’t injured.
Footage from the scene showed multiple officers outside an apartment complex, with one area in the parking lot closed off by yellow crime scene tape.
The three officers were placed on administrative duty, which is standard practice in police shootings.
No other information was immediately available.
