A Vero Beach man on an electric bicycle died following a two-vehicle crash on State Road 60 just before 5 p.m. Friday, law enforcement officials said.
The bicyclist fell to the ground after running over tree limbs in the outside bike lane and was struck by an eastbound sport utility traveling in the adjacent outside lane of State Road 60 east of 79th Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The SUV was initially said to be a silver Acura model vehicle, said Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Jaworski.
The man, 39, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, but he was declared deceased shortly after the crash just before 5 p.m., Jaworski said.
An Indian River County Sheriff’s Office civilian traffic unit closed all eastbound lanes of State Road 60 and redirected traffic at 82nd Avenue.
Before law enforcement and emergency workers arrived, several people were seen gathered around the man who was lying in the outside lane near what appeared to be tree limbs and crash debris in the roadway while others appeared to direct vehicles around the crash site.
