A man died after rear-ending a Jacksonville city bus Thursday morning in the Arlington area.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man in his 50s crashed his Ford Focus into the back of a JTA bus that had stopped at a bus stop to unload passengers on University Boulevard North. The crash happened around 11 a.m.
The driver was transported to the hospital with critical injuries but ultimately died, JSO said.
“There was another witness that saw that the impact and said that the car was attempting to switch from the right lane into the left lane,” said JSO Sgt. R H. “I guess go around the bus, but didn’t didn’t switch lanes fast enough or didn’t switch lanes early enough and still struck the rear of the bus with the right side of the car.”
“There’s substantial amount of crash damage to the vehicle so will be reviewing video and we will take some measurements to determine a speed and impact,” said H.
The southbound lanes of University Boulevard North were shut down at Fort Carolina Road and three blocks south.
There were six passengers on board the bus when the crash happened, JSO said. One of them suffered minor injuries.
V G, “I saw an ambulance and then I saw about 15 to 20 cop cars and lights and then I look in that car right there must have ran into the back of that bus,” said V G, who lives nearby.
This is the 149th traffic fatality in Duval County in 2024.
First Coast News reached out to a spokesperson with JTA and were sent this response:
“It’s an ongoing investigation and JTA is cooperating with the needs and requests of the investigating agency.”
