Man found dead in Sarasota hotel fire

arasota police said they found a man dead while responding to a hotel fire Wednesday morning.

Officers said the fire happened at the Baymont by Wyndham Sarasota on South Tamiami Trail, just after 9 a.m.

When first responders arrived, they found an injured man in a hotel room. They rendered aid to the man; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire officials said the fire was contained to the room where it started, but smoke from the fire impacted several motel units.

Fire officials said smoke alarms were not activated when they arrived on scene.

“There were no smoke alarms activated,” Battalion Chief Steven Rose said. “There were no fire alarms or sprinkler systems or protections activated as a result of this fire, so when the crews arrived on scene, they were the first mitigating factor on scene. I wouldn’t say it makes our job any more difficult. We still have the same job to do, but it obviously is an aid to us when we do have them present.”

We contacted the parent company of the motel asking why the smoke alarms and sprinkler systems weren’t functioning. We have not received a response back.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is now leading the investigation. They will work to determine the cause of the fire.
