Divers were called out to a marina at Haulover Park Tuesday night following reports of a man in a wheelchair going into the water.
Authorities believe it was a freak accident that led to the man going into the water. They said the man was in an electric wheelchair and that it rolled into the water.
It happened in the area of Collins Avenue and 108th Street around 7:30 p.m.
Miami-Dade Police Marine Patrol officers were already at the marina and quickly responded after hearing the commotion, police said.
The man in distress was eventually pulled from the water by first responders, and witnesses told Local 10 News that rescue workers were seen administering live-saving maneuvers on the man, who was then rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital for treatment.
Police said Tuesday night that the wheelchair had not been recovered, but that divers would be deployed to retrieve it.
