A man was killed in a crash Friday morning after his car ran off the road into a retention pond at the intersection of San Pablo Road and Sam Yepez Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said around 9 a.m., a man in his early 60s was driving a blue sedan northbound on San Pablo Road South and attempted to turn left onto westbound Sam Yepez Road when he lost control of his car.

According to JSO Sergeant Robert Hungerford, the man drove off the roadway and into a retention pond.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue pulled the man from the car and transported him to a local hospital, where he died shortly after his arrival.

Hungerford said it is “likely” the man suffered a medical episode, but the investigation is still ongoing.
