A man who initially fled a traffic stop was shot and killed after an officer fired their weapon at a gas station in Fort Lauderdale Sunday afternoon, officials said.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the incident happened at about 3 p.m. when officers attempted to pull the man over for a traffic stop in the 100 block of Southwest 27th Avenue.
Fort Lauderdale Police Chief B S said the driver didn’t stop and until he pulled into a Chevron gas station on the corner of Davie Boulevard and 31st Avenue and got out of the car.
“The driver exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm,” S told reporters at a news conference Sunday night. “One FLPD officer discharged his weapon during that time, striking the suspect.”
The man was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.
NBC6 cameras captured the area being taped off, and a nearby gas station was an area of focus for police.
A neighbor who lives nearby said he heard he heard back-to-back gunshots.
“We were outside and we heard like about eight shots went off,” K F said. “Then we started hearing police cars and stuff.”
F described how the gunshots sounded.
“Boom, boom, boom, boom, straight eight shots,” he said. “No pausing nothing, just straight eight shots.”
S said that the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is department policy.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is taking over the investigation, which is standard whenever there is a police-involved shooting.
