Man severely injured after fireworks accident in Florida City

A man was airlifted to a hospital after a fireworks-related accident in Florida City Monday, officials said.

The incident was reported near the 900 block of W. Lucy Street at the M7M Meat Market in Florida City, according to Florida City Police.

The fireworks accident left the man with a severe injury to his hand, police said. After the accident, he went back to his home in Homestead.

From there, paramedics airlifted him to Jackson South Trauma in stable condition.

No other information was immediately known.

A neighbor’s security camera recorded the moment when a U-Haul van drove down the neighborhood street in Homestead with something dangling out the window and blood splattered all over the side.

This may be an unfortunate example of the dangers of fireworks.

“If you decide to celebrate at home, only buy fireworks from approved vendors, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson E B said.

Only one person should handle lighting fireworks and they must light one firework at a time, remembering to move quickly to prevent injuries or burns.

“Light fireworks on a driveway or a paved surface away from grass or anything that can possibly burn,” B said.

But B says it’s important to note one must never attempt to re-light or handle fireworks that did not ignite the first time.

“Always have a garden hose, a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher close by, in case of an emergency,” she said.
