Man shot by Orlando police officer has died, officials say

A man shot Friday by an Orlando police officer has since died due to “unknown complications,” according to a statement from the police department.

Officers responded around 2:20 p.m. Friday to the 400 block of South John Young Parkway referencing an armed man at the BP gas station near Bus Center Boulevard, according to Orlando police Chief E S’s remarks later that afternoon.

The man was identified Saturday as M M, 63, according to the Orlando Police Department.

Arriving to the scene and locating M on the sidewalk outside of the gas station, officers gave him multiple commands to drop a gun that he was allegedly holding, S said.

“The suspect refused the commands and was shot by one officer,” S said.

M was taken to the hospital, where he was in stable condition as of Friday afternoon, according to police.

“With all the calls we received, to be walking around with a gun at a busy intersection — I’m not sure what he was going through. But obviously, he was going through something,” S said. “And then not to drop the gun after being given verbal commands? That’s not a good thing.”

Orlando police said that M faced charges of resisting without violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful exhibition of a firearm.

According to S, that the officer who shot M was uninjured in the shooing and had been placed on paid administrative leave.

S said that M had an extensive criminal history and served 20 years in prison for second-degree murder before being released in 2023.

This is a developing story.
