SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide in Sun City Center that happened Sunday night.
HCSO received a call regarding shots fired at 10:43 p.m. on Sunday to find a dead man with multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived.
Investigators found a group was gathered at a community center when an “altercation” began. Shots rang out and a man was fatally struck by the gunfire, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The scene was still very active early Monday morning with Hillsborough County deputies securing the area with crime scene tape and evidence markers in the street as they investigated the shooting.
One neighbor said she heard the whole thing.
“It sounded like about four or five pops and then probably a couple of minutes, few minutes after that because I went to go look out my window and then we heard about four or five after that again,” Cypress Creek resident Celeste said.
She said this is the second shooting on her street in the same area.
“Within six months this is the second time,” Celeste said.
The sheriff’s office said deputies are working on interviewing witnesses and neighbors as they try to piece together what happened.
“At this time, we do not have a suspect in custody, but we do have people of interest. At this time, we have not identified the victim, and next of, but when next of kin is notified, we’d be able to release that information,” Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Public Relations Coordinator Caitlin Wilson said.
For neighbors like Celeste, the unknowns so close to home are even more alarming.
“Scary. It’s scary when it’s literally right in front of your house,” she said.
