A person has been detained, according to NBC2 sources, after a bomb toward Cape Coral High School prompted a lockdown at the school and severed nearby schools.
A man reportedly threatened to blow up the high school, which prompted the lockdown on Wednesday morning. All lockdowns have since been lifted.
NBC2 crews at the scene learned that a 40 to 50-year-old man with a camouflage backpack said he was going to blow up the school.
The man never went inside Cape Coral High and walked north along Santa Barbara.
A student heard about the incident and reported it.
The Cape Coral Police Department stated via Twitter:
“…detectives investigate a possible bomb threat. Our agency takes potential threats very seriously and is actively working to ensure the safety of all students.”
A helicopter was surrounding the area, looking for the suspect.
Cape Coral police said a K-9 was at the scene sniffing the perimeter before students were released.
Heritage Charter Academy, Skyline Elementary, Challenger Middle School, Patriot Elementary, and Pelican Elementary were also on lockdown as a precaution.
The Lee County School District released a message to families with students in schools on lockdown stating:
“We want to advise you that the lockdown at your child’s school continues due to off-campus law enforcement activity. Students are being kept safe, and the campuses are secure. We will notify you once the lockdowns are lifted and normal operations resume. Thank you for your understanding.”
Football practice and other after-school activities have been canceled for Wednesday at Cape Coral High School.
