A homicide investigation is underway on Thursday near Stuart after a man was shot and killed.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said before 10 a.m., dispatch received a call from a man stating he was in the company of a woman who possibly shot and killed a man earlier in the day. The man told dispatch they could speak to investigators at the Home Depot in Jensen Beach, and deputies arrived to speak to the two.
Sheriff William Snyder was at the crime scene on SE Darling Street, south of Willoughby Boulevard, where the man’s body was found. Snyder provided his initial findings. The scene is still active while deputies await the medical examiner, but the sheriff’s office declared the man’s death as a homicide.
“It appears to us that the cause of death is at least a gunshot wound, perhaps more, we’re being very careful,” Sheriff Snyder said.
Snyder said the woman voluntarily went to the sheriff’s office to provide a statement.
“I would not say she’s in custody, I would say she’s cooperating with law enforcement,” Sheriff Snyder said.
What the woman told investigators was she had gotten into an altercation with a man she knew, and it escalated when she shot him. Snyder said the woman, possibly with some help, dumped the body on the dirt road of Darling Street. Snyder said the street is near the home of the man who initially called the sheriff’s office with the woman.
“Whether it’s murder or self-defense, I don’t know yet,” Snyder said.
Sheriff Snyder says he doesn’t believe there is a threat to the public.
“As far as we can tell we have the shooter, we have the victim, the scene is contained, and there is no danger to the community,” said Snyder.
The sheriff’s office is still working to determine where exactly the shooting occurred. Sheriff Snyder said at the scene where the body was found there was also a white pick up truck, which is believed to be registered to the deceased, that had a bullet hole in the window.
“Crazy things are going on in the world. I was shocked!” said Marlene Rastrelli, who has lived near SE Darling Street for 46 years.
“It’s scary in this neighborhood. Very scary. I’m not sure what’s going on, but it doesn’t look good with the police and everybody involved there. It’s pretty scary,” said Gail Farrell, a Palm City resident who works not far from where the body was found.
Snyder says the sheriff’s office is working to find a motive.
“I think the question now for us to determine is motive. She’s admitting she shot him. He is dead. What were the circumstances? We just have to find that out before we know exactly what we have,” said Sheriff Snyder.
This is a breaking news story. More details will be provided as it becomes available.
