Marion Oaks teen still in coma after scooter crash

A Marion Oaks family is still searching for answers following a crash that sent their teenage son to the hospital and into a coma.

15-year-old J B was riding his scooter on Southwest Highway 484 on Dec. 26, 2025, when he was hit by a driver.

“His godbrothers noticed he hadn’t come back yet,” J’s grandmother Carla King told TV20. “They were outside looking for him and they saw the ambulance coming down the street. They alerted us and it was just a feeling they had.”

His mother, T B, told TV20 that Jermaine had been on his way to Dollar General on the scooter he had just gotten for Christmas the day before. It was dark when he left, she said, but the scooter had its lights on. His family said they later found him in the woods facedown.

J was checked into UF Shands in Gainesville with brain trauma and suffering multiple strokes. According to B, he is still in a coma.

J’s family said they have reached out to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers nearly every day since the accident, but they only heard back Monday night. K said an FHP trooper told her the crash was her son’s fault and the case was closed.

TV20 reached out to FHP for comment. They directed our reporter to their website to order a crash report.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information is learned.
