Miami-Dade man accused of abuse after police say baby had brain bleed, detached retinas

A northwest Miami-Dade man was ordered held without bond Sunday after authorities accused him of shaking a baby to the point that the infant suffered a range of serious injuries on New Year’s Day.

Miami-Dade police arrested M C P, 32, on an aggravated child abuse charge Friday.

An arrest report states that the crime took place in his home in the 20000 block of Northwest 62nd Place in the unincorporated Country Club area.

According to an arrest report, P took the 3-month-old boy to an unnamed hospital on New Year’s Day.

Reading from the report in a probable cause hearing Sunday, Miami-Dade prosecutor Marie Koth said the child “suffered from uncontrolled seizures, has both retinas detached, was intubated, was unable to eat on his own (and) suffered from a brain bleed.”

Authorities said a doctor determined that the baby’s injuries were caused by being shaken.

P’s attorney, in arguing for a lesser child neglect charge over the weekend, argued in court that there was no evidence for abuse, and said his client simply told detectives that he “bounced the victim (on his lap) harder than usual to try to soothe (him) because he was fussy.”

In unsuccessfully arguing for the neglect charge, P’s attorney also said the arrest report didn’t specify how the doctor determined that the injuries were caused by shaking.

Koth said the doctor’s reasoning was clear based on the nature of the injuries, which she said “clearly belie” the idea of “bouncing.”

“Bouncing does not cause your retinas to be detached,” she said.

After finding probable cause for the aggravated child abuse charge, Miami-Dade Judge R C ordered P to be held without bond pending a pre-trial detention hearing.

He was also ordered to stay away from the child if released.

As of Monday, P remained in the Metrowest Detention Center, online records show.
