A mother in Orange County was arrested after a fire in August killed her baby and injured her other child, according to the sheriff’s office.
In a news release on Tuesday, deputies said the fire happened on Aug. 26 in the 7200 block of Hiawassee Oaks Drive.
At the time, the mother and her two children were taken to the hospital with “serious injuries” that they suffered in the fire, deputies added.
“After a thorough investigation, our homicide detectives determined the woman involved in this incident… intentionally caused the fire, which killed one of her children, 9-month-old Da Vinci Joseph,” the release reads. “Her surviving child was released from the hospital soon after the fire.”While the mother remains in the hospital, she now faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to investigators.
She has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Nov. 12.
No additional information has been provided at this time, including what caused the fire or any possible motives.
News 6 has opted against releasing the mother’s name at this time due to potential mental health concerns.
