A car crash killed a mother and left her 2-year-old daughter hospitalized with life-threatening injuries on Monday afternoon.

Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash around 1:45 p.m. at State Road 540 and Cooley Road in Eagle Lake where they found the 33-year-old woman dead in her vehicle. The woman’s daughter was in the back of the car in a child safety seat, according to a news release.

The crash happened when the woman was driving south on Cooley and collided with a utility truck that was headed east on State Road 540. At an intersection, the woman drove onto State Road 540 by crossing over the westbound lanes then proceeded on the eastbound lands of travel, which is when the two cars crashed.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, and the 39-year-old man driving the utility truck was not injured, according to deputies.

The eastbound lanes of the state road were closed for about three hours, and officials are still investigating.
