Mother of three dies after massive fire, explosion at Orlando apartment complex

A local family is devastated on Monday.

Three young boys have lost their mother, and their father is grieving over a young lady he’s known since eighth grade. An explosion just over a week ago has rocked an entire family.

“It’s really tragic. I saw the boys today and they were crying they just learned about it, broke my heart” attorney Rick Troutman said.

On Sunday night, Raven Moon told his three young sons — ages 4, 9 and 13 — that their mother had died.

“Over the weekend, she developed pneumonia and her husband was told by the doctor on Saturday night she wouldn’t make it through the night. She passed away during the early hours Sunday morning,” Troutman said.

Mikeanesha Moore had just dropped the boys off at school and her husband at work on the morning of March 1 and returned to their Woodhill Apartments in Orlando.

“When she came back at around 9:30 she went in her apartment and within five minutes there was a huge explosion, and according to the neighbor the ring camera captured her running out on fire,” Troutman said.

Her family filed a lawsuit, and it says she suffered third and fourth-degree burns on over 40% of her body.

The attorney alleges the previous tenants removed the dryer, left the gas line uncapped and then there was no inspection.

“If had they spent two dollars and bought this cap and screwed it on there, this woman would have been alive today. Their kids would have a mother, and her husband would be still happily married and have a wonderful life to look forward to. We’re alleging that Woodhill, who owns the apartments and owns the land, is negligent, and so is Highmark Residential, they’re the other defendant we named in this case, because they were the company that managed it,” Troutman said.

WESH 2 spoke with the assistant manager by phone here at Woodhill, and she had no comment. We also reached to two other defendants in this case: one was closed, and we’re waiting hear back from the other.

“The message they wanted to send was, you know, it’s not really about us, it’s about everybody else. Let’s not let this happen again,” Troutman said.

The family’s attorney hopes to have a trial date set within nine months.

We’re also waiting on the official cause of the explosion from fire officials.
