A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a pickup truck while driving through Winter Haven late Saturday night.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Cypress Gardens Boulevard Southeast and Cypress Gardens Road, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The motorcyclist, a 46-year-old Babson Park man, was heading east on Cypress Gardens Boulevard on his 2004 Harley Davidson when officials said he drove through a solid red light.

A 40-year-old Winter Haven woman driving a 2015 Ford F-150 truck had been stopped at her light facing Cypress Gardens Road north around the same time. Deputies said her light had just turned green when the motorcyclist entered the intersection.

The two vehicles collided as the woman drove onto Cypress Gardens Boulevard to turn west.

The force from the collision caused the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, to be thrown off his bike, the sheriff’s office reported.

He was taken to a local hospital, where officials said he succumbed to his “significant injuries” soon after.

The woman driving the truck was not injured.

While the investigation was ongoing Sunday, deputies said there was no indication that the motorcyclist tried to hit his brakes or avoid the crash.

The intersection was shut down for nearly four hours. No further information was immediately available.
