Multi-fatality crash closes River Road in Venice

Both directions of River Road in unincorporated Venice are closed due to a multi-fatality vehicle crash.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the fatal accident that involved two vehicles.

According to FHP, a Sedan was traveling on SR-777 south of West Villages Parkway around 3:35 a.m. when it crossed the center line and entered the northbound lane where a Sport Utility Vehicle was traveling.

The Sedan collided with the Sport Utility Vehicle after traveling into the northbound lane.

According to FHP, the Sedan caught on fire and the Sport Utility Vehicle, driven by a 64-year-old woman overturned onto the northbound shoulder.

The 64-year-old woman was transported to the nearby hospital with serious injuries, according to SCSO.

The driver and passenger of the Sedan were pronounced dead at the scene.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes.
