After a 13-year-old girl was run over and killed while riding a bicycle in Brevard County, family and neighbors are calling for changes to what they say is a dangerous road.
The tragedy, which is still under investigation, happened October 10 on Aurora Road by Cecilia Street, not far from I-95 near Melbourne.
The FHP said a Groveland woman was driving a 2013 Dodge Durango west on Aurora Road when Floyd Healy was trying to cross the street and was struck. Healy was taken to Holmes Regional Hospital and was pronounced dead.
A memorial now marks the spot where Healy was killed.
Mike Toth, who lives nearby, said a sidewalk was added along the road recently but more needs to be done to make it safer.
“People have no respect,” Toth said. “They fly by and they don’t care.”
The FHP did not say if speed was a factor in the crash.
The speed limit is 45 mph, but Brevard County officials said traffic engineers are now working on a speed study, which could result in a lower speed limit in the area.
Toth said he’d also like to see more sidewalks and a crosswalk with flashing lights.
Other neighbors and the Healy family said added measures could prevent more crashes and save lives.
“You never want to hear that,” Toth said about the crash. “Especially, a child, you know.”
It’s not known when the study will be completed.
The driver and her three passengers were not injured and remained at the scene, according to troopers.
