Officers shot a 53-year-old woman overnight who fired a gun at them after they were called to a home near the Oceanway area by the woman’s husband, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
The woman was in critical condition. No officers were hurt.
It was one of three shootings overnight that left one person dead. Only one shooting involved officers.
Those officers were called to the house on Moose Road just off New Berlin Road around 11 p.m. Tuesday after the woman’s husband found his wife in their garage during what officers believe was a suicide attempt.
After he found her in the garage, she walked outside and sat on a bench and her husband called 911 for help. He saw she had a gun.
When officers got there, her husband told them where the woman was and that he had been talking with her.
As officers prepared to approach the woman, she fired three of four shots, police say.
Six officers returned fire, shooting the woman. She was hit several times and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Charges are expected to be filed against the woman.
One neighbor’s house was hit by some of the bullets, and another’s car was hit. They were not injured.
Denise James lives down the street from the man and woman and said she knows them well.
“I am just in shock over it,” James said. “It is traumatic for everybody around here. It affects so many people when these types of things happen. When I came out, there were just boom, lights everywhere, police cars, crime scene tape, cones put out. What are the words? You just don’t have words for these times.”
JSO released the names of the six officers involved: Brendon Johns, Anthony Mariotti, Zachary Poole, Jordan Gay, Daniel Veres, and Maurice Brown. They are all on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation.
