Okeechobee man accused of assaulting woman, holding her against her will

The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that a man is in custody after allegedly assaulting and holding a woman against her will.

Leonel “Nelly” Ruiz, 32, of Okeechobee, was arrested Monday and charged with sexual battery, aggravated battery, tampering with a witness, felony battery, domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment.

The sheriff’s office said on Saturday it received a report about a 33-year-old woman who had been sexually assaulted and held against her will for several days in the Fort Drum area.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was able to get away from Ruiz and was picked up by a friend who brought her to town and notified law enforcement.
