Older man and pet rescued from duplex fire in Lee County

An older man and a pet were rescued from a fire that ignited in a single-story duplex along Whiskey Creek Drive Thursday night.

According to the Iona McGregor Fire District, a crew was in the area when the call came in.

Crews noticed smoke coming from the unit when they arrived and received reports of a disabled, elderly man trapped in the bedroom near the front door.

Firefighters found the victim approximately 10 feet inside a bedroom and were able to safely remove him from the home. According to fire officials, a pet was also rescued.

Additional crews arrived and were able to extinguish the fire.

The Iona-McGregor Fire District said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
