A Pembroke Pines man is under arrest, after a shooting early Tuesday morning in Boynton Beach.
The guy allegedly fired several shots at an Uber driver at a gas station at U.S.1 and Boynton Beach Boulevard.
Police have released few details about what happenedat theChevron station, 217 North Federal Highway in Boynton Beach.
But there’s no question how terrifying it must have been for an Uber driver whosepassenger allegedly gets out and starts shooting.
“That’s pretty crazy, I mean I guess you really have to be careful, especially being an Uber driver. It’s really dangerous,” said Veronica, a Chevron customer from Lake Worth Beach.
Cell phone video from a passerby shows the scene Tuesday morning, before dawn, when police rushed to a Chevron station in Boynton Beach.
Police say an Uber driver and an individual, identified by police as Mikel Mouaddeb, 22,of Pembroke Pines, had an issue over the fare.
The Uber driver left and Mouaddeb took out a gun and fired several shots.
Police have not said if the Uber driver was struck by the gunfire.
“Terrifying. I mean that’s the world we live in especially nowadays. You never know who has a gun. And it’s something silly over Uber, a fare,” said Michael Studley, a Chevron customer from Boynton Beach.
“I think the world is becoming very dangerous. It’s not safe anywhere unless you know exactly where you are and who you’re with,” said another Chevron customer who did not give his name.
This incident is causing other rideshare drivers to be concerned about their safety on the job.
“I recently arrived in the U.S. and this is one of the only ways I can earn right now so it’s very, very disheartening to hear something like that,” said Michael Senior, a Lyft driver from Port St. Lucie.”Do you still feel safe working as a Lyft driver?” we asked Senior.
“Well not in its entirety. So I’m going to be more cautious moving forward,” said Senior, who says he recently moved to the U.S. from Jamaica.
“The issue we’re having these days is a lot of angry passengers are not happy about the fare and sometimes they just want to do whatever they want in the car,” said Innocent Stone, an Uber driver from West Palm Beach.
Stone told us he only picks up passengers at Palm Beach International Airport and has stopped picking up passengers in other parts of West Palm Beach.
“I stopped doing the city drive because of the aggressiveness of the passengers and that is why I am very, very scared to do it because a lot of people are angry. I just don’t know the reason,” Stone said.
Mouaddeb is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and firing a weapon in public. He’s being held without bond.
He has one prior arrest in June 2023 for criminal mischief and throwing a deadly missile into a building.
In that incident, the arrest report says he threw a brick threw a window at his mother’s house. The charges were later dismissed.
