Deputies are investigating Monday after one person was killed in a shooting in Charlotte County near the Lee County line.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation is along Nasturtium Drive, a neighborhood off US-41 south of Zemel Road.
At 4:24 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office released a statement saying, “The investigation is still fresh and ongoing. All people involved are accounted for; therefore, the public is not in danger. A person was shot and killed and we will not be releasing their identity as of now, but in the near future.”
NBC2 is on the scene, and multiple forensics vans, the mobile unified command unit and animal control can be seen.
Neighbors said deputies have been on the scene since around 1 a.m. One neighbor said they heard a gunshot Sunday night but didn’t call 911 since there is always stuff happening at the home in question.
The next-door neighbors showed NBC2 a shovel that appeared in their garbage cans that did not belong to them, saying they just noticed it.
Deputies took pictures of the shovel and brought it in for evidence.
These neighbors we spoke to live just a couple of yards from the crime scene on Nasturtium Drive.
Neighbors also said they see lots of people coming and going from the property all of the time.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is in the “very early stages” and declined to provide any additional details.
