‘One stupid mistake’: 69-year-old woman accidentally shoots, kills roomate, WPB police say

A 69-year-old woman has been accused of negligent manslaughter after accidentally shooting her roommate while showing off a gun she believed was unloaded.

The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) stated that on May 16 at 9:18 p.m., S R had called 911.

The probable cause affidavit states that during the phone call, R told the call taker, “I accidentally shot my roommate!”

She continued to state, “I was showing my roommate my gun, I thought it was unloaded because the magazine is out of it, and I shot the gun, and I shot my roommate…somewhere in the stomach region.”

When officers arrived on the scene on Avon Road in West Palm Beach, they reported finding R’s roommate with a gunshot wound to the middle of her chest. Paramedics transported the roommate to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where she died nearly an hour after being shot.

In a conversation with WPBPD detectives, Russel told them that she was showing her roommate a gun she had found in a piece of luggage.

The report states that R’s roommate had asked to hold the pistol, Russell handed over the gun and in the process pulled the trigger, shooting her roommate.

R further said to WPBPD, “One stupid mistake of not making sure the f****** chamber was empty when you thought it was, that’s all, double check!”

R has been charged with negligent manslaughter.
