Two teens were struck by a jeep while riding scooters Tuesday night in Orlando, leaving one critically injured and the driver arrested.
“I just kept telling him I love him, I love him. Will you please hang on,” said Valencia DeLeon, describing her conversation with her son Troy DeLeon after the incident.
According to the incident report, the boys were heading south down I-Drive.
Florida Highway Patrol said the jeep driver was 58-year-old Dennis Trost. He was making a left turn.
According to the incident report, the boys didn’t have their scooter headlights on. Trost hit the two, but rather than stop, he kept going.
FHP later found Trost in a nearby area. His jeep had damage consistent with the collision.
Trost was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, which is a felony. However, this isn’t the first time for Trost.
He has a long list of traffic infractions dating back over 20 years.
“The only reason these kids had a fighting chance was because of good Samaritans,” DeLeon said.
DeLeon said one woman took the shirt off her back to help stop the bleeding until help arrived.
“Troy was doused in gasoline from the impact,” DeLeon said. “He had to be thrown in this medical shower when he got here.”
Troy underwent surgery for a broken bone in his leg.
DeLeon said she’s grateful her son is alive but feels greatly for his friend Ashley Nielsen, who remains unresponsive in critical condition, fighting for his life.
“If he would have just stopped and called it in,” she said.”Those few minutes could have made a difference.”
Ashley Nielsen’s family has set up a GoFundMe page.
