Orlando mother makes plea bargain after daughter fatally shoots woman during fight, prosecutors say

A plea hearing took place Friday morning for an Orlando mother facing charges of manslaughter, culpable negligence and child neglect as prosecutors say her daughter fatally shot a woman who the mother was fighting about two years ago.

Lakrisha Isaac, 33, pleaded not guilty to those charges about a month after her arrest in the May 30, 2022, shooting at the Jernigan Gardens Apartments on Mercy Drive, court records show.

Friday, Isaac changed her plea in court from not guilty to no contest on charges of manslaughter and culpable negligence by leaving a loaded firearm within reach of a minor. The defense and prosecution reached an agreement and are asking for a sentence of five years in prison followed by three years probation. Sentencing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 21.

The girl, who was 10 years old at the time of the shooting, was also arrested shortly thereafter, yet the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office said in statement that no charging decision was made.

A witness described Isaac’s daughter getting hold of the gun after her mother handed her a bag with the firearm inside it, soon using it to shoot a woman who Isaac allegedly approached and started a physical fight with. The victim — identified by police as Lashun Rodgers, 41 — was having a cookout with her boyfriend for Memorial Day at the time, police said.

Rodgers was shot twice and later died at the hospital, police said.
