Orlando woman struck, killed after exiting crashed SUV on Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola

A 39-year-old Orlando woman was killed early Friday when she exited her crashed SUV on Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County and was struck by a big rig, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal wreck happened just after 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 202, south of Whittier. All southbound lanes are blocked at mile marker 202 and traffic is being diverted at mile marker 249.

The FHP said the woman was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Captiva Sport south when a tire blew out, causing her to crash into a guardrail and leaving the SUV partially in a travel lane and shoulder.

The woman got out of her SUV and was struck and killed by a southbound tractor-trailer, troopers said.

The big rig overturned into a ditch, but the driver, a 66-year-old North Lauderdale man, was not injured and remained at the scene, according to an FHP crash report.

The crash is under investigation.
