A deputy rescued a man after coming across a truck fire on his way to work.
While on his way to work on October 13, a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy came across a burning truck on the southbound shoulder of I-95 near Becker Road in Port St. Lucie while on the way to work.
Though a shocking scene, Deputy Crafa pulled his patrol vehicle to the scene of the single-vehicle crash. At the same moment, the passenger of the truck was spotted trying to get out. After some struggle, the passenger was able to get out of the burning truck. However, he was too injured to move, falling to the ground.
The Deputy Crafa dragged the man from the nearby flames. Although the passenger was pulled to safety, he told the deputy there was still another person in the truck — the driver.
PBSO said the unresponsive driver was pinned between the door and a tree. As the fire in the front of the truck grew, the PBSO deputy ran back to his patrol vehicle to grab a fire extinguisher, but the fire was too strong.
Deputy Crafa tries to get the driver out but realizes extrication tools are needed. With his radio out of service range, the sheriff’s office said he used his cellphone to call 911, all while still dragging the passenger to a safe spot.
The harrowing experience continued for several minutes until fire rescue arrived. Fire rescue crews put out the fire, but tragically, the driver of the truck did not survive, the sheriff’s office stated.
PBSO said the scene was then handed over to Florida Highway Patrol and other emergency service personnel.
