A house caught fire early Friday in Palm Coast, resulting in the deaths of four pets and the hospitalization of one resident, according to a post from the Palm Coast Fire Department.
Units were dispatched at 1:03 a.m. to the Matanzas Woods subdivision, where residents of the home told crews that the fire started on the pool deck at the back of the house.
It is unclear how many people were in the home, but one resident was hospitalized after suffering significant smoke inhalation while trying to rescue their pets, the post states.
Four of the pets did not survive, officials said. The resident has been hospitalized and is in stable condition, according to the fire department.
The home had fire and thick black smoke coming from its rear and reaching into the attic, fire department officials said.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
