Passenger dies after being thrown from car in Volusia County crash on I-4

One person is dead and two are injured after a car crash on I-4 in Volusia County early Saturday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 3:20 a.m. Saturday on I-4 westbound near mile marker 130. Troopers said a 2013 Honda Accord hit the right rear side of a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe while both were traveling westbound.

The Accord spun out and hit a guardrail in the median before running off the other side of the roadway into a ditch and then airborne into a tree. The Santa Fe also hit the median guardrail before it overturned multiple times before coming to a rest upright in the median.

The 37-year-old man riding in the Santa Fe was thrown from the vehicle while it was overturning. He was pronounced dead at the scene by FHP. Troopers said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Santa Fe driver and the driver of the Accord were both transported to Halifax Hospital with injuries.

Troopers are continuing to investigate what led up to the crash.
