PBCFR firefighters perform ‘side-out’ to free trapped person from wrecked car

Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a crash in Delray Beach that forced emergency responders to cut a large hole into the side of the sedan to reach one of them.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) posted images from the scene of the wreck, which happened around 4:30 p.m. in the 7600 block of Atlantic Avenue, showing the extent of the effort and describing how they performed what is described as a “side-out.”

The post explained that firefighters started by taking off the front and rear doors of the gold Chevrolet Impala. Next, they removed the B-post that divides the doors. After cutting their way into the car, the firefighters used heavy blankets to cover up any potentially dangerous, exposed metal and freed the individual.

PBCFR stated two people were taken to the hospital; however, its post did not indicate how badly they were injured.

The agency did not detail what caused the collision, which forced officials to temporarily shut down Atlantic Avenue. In addition to the sedan, the images it posted also showed a Honda Crosstour which had suffered heavy front-end damage.
