The man who was hit and severely injured in downtown Ocala Sunday night has died at a local hospital, city police officials said.

Who’s the investigating agency? Ocala Police Department.
Where was the crash? In the 200 block of North Pine Avenue, just north of the Marion County Judicial Center, police officials said.
What happened? Authorities said the victim was trying to cross the roadway from east to west when he was struck by a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 26-year-old Jacksonville woman.
OPD officials said first responders arrived and performed CPR on the man, who was then transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where he later died. The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m.
The victim was identified as James Ewing, 63, of Ocala. Police officials said the woman, whose name was not released, was on her way home at the time of the crash.
Investigators said the woman told them she did not see the pedestrian until the last minute. They said the area where the crash took place has dimmed lighting.
What’s next? Though the investigation is ongoing, officers said speed doesn’t appear to be factor and they did not detect any signs of impairment.

Last year, there were nine traffic deaths in the city. Of those, two were pedestrians, five were on motorcycles, and one each from a bicycle and a vehicle.
