A man was seriously injured Monday afternoon after a driver accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake while trying to park at a Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union in Escambia County, sending the car into the front of the building, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the crash happened at about 3:06 p.m. at 1444 Creighton Road.

Investigators say an 81-year-old Pensacola woman was driving a sedan west through the credit union’s parking lot as a 37-year-old Jay man walked toward the front door.

While attempting to park in a marked space, the woman pressed the accelerator rather than the brake, causing the sedan to collide with the front of the building and strike the man, according to FHP.

FHP says the driver was not injured and was cited for careless driving.
