Pedestrian seriously injured while crossing Port St. Lucie street

A pedestrian who collided with a vehicle on a Port St. Lucie street Saturday morning was crossing when traffic had the green light, investigators determined.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) reported that the man was crossing Southeast Walton Road, near the Southeast Main Street intersection, shortly after 10 a.m. when he was hit by the vehicle.

The 48-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Lawnwood Hospital, according to a PSLPD statement, which noted in an update that he is now awake and alert.

According to its statement, the pedestrian was crossing improperly at the time of the incident.

The collision shut down the eastbound lanes of Walton Road at that intersection, but they have since reopened.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 772-871-5001 or Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477.
