A pickup truck crashed into a concrete wall, splitting in half and catching fire Thursday on the Crosstown Connector in the Tampa Bay area, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 2018 Dodge pickup was heading north on the Selmon Crosstown Connector, south of Interstate 4, when the driver made a U-turn and began traveling south in the northbound lanes, troopers said.

An FHP crash report said the truck then hit the concrete barrier wall before catching fire.

The driver, a 41-year-old St. Petersburg man, was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition, the FHP said.

The northbound lanes of the Crosstown Connector were closed after the crash, but they were later reopened.
